Obama slams Staples for reducing hours to avoid Obamacare; here’s how Staples responded…

President Obama lashed out against CEO’s and business leaders who have cut hours in response to costly Affordable Care Act mandates which would force them to provide insurance for employees working more than 30 hours a week.
More than 300 major businesses have made cutbacks in response to such mandates. While more than 5.6 million small businesses have incurred additional costs due to the ACA.

Obama singled out Staples, the office supply retailer that has made news this past week for no longer allowing part-time employees to work over 25 hours a week.

“I haven’t looked at Staples stock lately or what the compensation of the CEO is, but I suspect that they could well afford to treat their workers favorably and give them some basic financial security and if they can’t, then they should be willing to allow those workers to get the Affordable Care Act without cutting wages,” Obama said.
Staples fired back at the presidents remarks with this statement:
“The initial [BuzzFeed] story was misleading as our policy regarding hours for part-time employees is more than a decade old,” said Kirk Saville, a Staples spokesman.
“It’s unfortunate that the president is attacking a company that provides more than 85,000 jobs and is a major taxpayer,” he added.
The price of Staples’ stock and the compensation their CEO’s make is not the point. The people who run Staples not only provide a service which Americans willfully exchange money for, they also provide jobs to communities.
Providing maximum service for the lowest possible cost is the prime motivation of any business. Regulations that attempt to tie more costs to employment will only succeed in reducing employment.
Obama may lecture CEO’s about their salaries and not providing their workers financial security, yet the hypocrisy is blatant as the White House is very dependent on its unpaid interns. Surely, if Staples can afford to pay its employees, so can the White House.
If there is one defining characteristic of President Obama’s economic policies it is a complete disregard for, if not an open hostility to private enterprise. Obama has continued to blame our economy’s most productive for unemployment and revenue shortages, while saddling businesses with onerous, costly regulations.

The United States has the highest corporate tax rate in the industrial world. This obviously motivates the practice of tax inversion- companies moving their headquarters to other countries to avoid paying US taxes.

  1. No employer would reduce workers' hours if we had Universal Health Care like every other civilized nation on earth.

  2. Nitwits in government who never had to make a payroll from profits think businesses should compensate people like government-but businesses can't print money and steal from their customers like government can.

  3. 1) Make all politician's pay a percentage of the AVERAGE pay of their constituents. That would give them INCENTIVE to get jobs back from China.
    2) Make all politician's retirement plans a percentage of the AVERAGE retirement plan of their constituents, that provides INCENTIVE to work for the PEOPLE.
    3) Make all politicians get on SOCIAL SECURITY, like the rest of us, and dissolve their fancy, overpaid plans. All State/Federal workers also.
That will provide INCENTIVE to fix what THEY BROKE.
    4) Make all politician's medical benefits a percentage of the AVERAGE benefits of their constituents, that provides INCENTIVE to work for the PEOPLE .
    5) Make all politician's pensions dependent on the security of their constituent's pensions. If the People are losing their pensions due to economic distresses then the politicians should also.

  4. More welfare. More big govt. That's your answer to everything. If everyone's health care cam;e from the govt, we'd all be cowards afraid to criticize anything the govt does.

  5. Universal Health Care, would be affordable if taxpayers money was not voted out of America by Israeli firsters posing as Americans in the body politic, Wall Street and the military industrial complex, which is the internal axis of evil feeding the destructive meme against humanity. The external axis of evil is and always has been the US-Israel-EU

But you'd have to fix the American system from the ground up first. It's the most greedy system in the world. The system is all about PROFIT every step of the way. These excessive profits are not possible in a socialized system like we have in Canada. Healthcare should be universal. I pay huge taxes and never see a doctor or go to hospital at 47 years of age but I support it 100%. I will need it in the future. It's about the greater good. Obamacare iswill be a failure due to the biuld in profit system no one can afford.

  7. Folks need to remember obama has zero private sector work experience. Never had to punch a time clock or meet payroll. Everything he knows is "in theory". Detached and delusional.

  8. The phony baloney US of Everything Is Rigged, Illegal (or pending)

  9. Simple, pass a law that says:

No company in america can distribute bonuses or dividends to any person or shareholder if even one employee receives any kind of Local, County, State or Federal assistance. Money should be channeled back into the employees first, ensuring that the State does not have to take on the financial burden of supporting its citizens while corporations hand out bonuses to executives and shareholders.

Our state run support system has been turned into a Corporate Welfare subsidy. This is why all those MBA's go to college, to figure out how to push the corporate expenses on everyone else but the corporation, freeing up money for bonuses and dividends.

  10. Back in 1990, the government seized the Mustang Ranch brothel in Nevada for tax evasion, and as required by law, tried to run it. They failed and it closed. Now the same characters who couldn’t make money running a whore house and selling whiskey are running ObamaCare.

  11. Hmmm
Fact check: The United States DOES NOT HAVE ANYWHERE NEAR THE HIGHEST EFFECTIVE TOTAL TAX RATE IN THE WORLD (for the richest Americans). The reality is that the richest 1/10 of 1% as a group pay well under 10% on adjusted gross income (tiny faction of the total). And they pay 3% or less on offshore income (for the super rich most of their income). In other words, the 1/10 of 1% who are now making 1/3 of the money each year, ARE NOT PAYING DIDDLEY in taxes. And the corporations which they own are not paying taxes either. Hells bells people a large percentage of the fortune 50 (they represent a huge percentage of total revenues generated nation wide) pay ZERO TAXES! In fact a significant number get refunds. On the other hand, the United States does have one of the highest effective total tax burdens on the middle and lower income brackets in the world. Notice I said total tax, not income tax. Add up the local, country, state and federal taxes paid by the average citizen and it is in many cases its approaching 40%. Though in healthcare and suddenly the working class stiff is taking home pennies on the dollar.

  12. CEOs is the plural of CEO, not CEO's. CEO's is the possessive form, as is: "It was the CEO's plan to skirt Obamacare rules...". This is fifth grade English class. You get an F for this article.

  13. Why do some companies get exemptions while others do not? Political contributions....maybe? Let's be fair. Everyone gets an exemption........including Congress...BRAAAHAAAAAAHAAAAAA

  14. Oh Hell Yes...................You nailed it Bro'. I have been saying similar statements for years. Congress MUST elevate themselves above the populace in order to prove to us that they are more important. They cannot fathom being equal(shudder). Deliver your piece to Congress and prepare to be ignored.

  15. They could not run the Mustang Ranch because they used up all the product.

  16. reduce corporate taxes to 10% or less and watch what happens
