Police Scrutinized For Placing Three-Year-Old Behind Bars

Police in Strongsville, Ohio, are facing criticism for their decision to lock a three-year-old girl up behind bars after arresting her mother for shoplifting.
27-year-old Latonya Bass was in a Walmart store with her three-year-old daughter and decided to steal over $500 worth of merchandise by stashing it in the little girl’s stroller.
Bass was arrested and taken to the police station where she was placed in a holding cell, but the three-year-old girl had no place else to go, so she too was placed behind bars with her mother for a half-hour before her father came to pick her up.
Police maintain that they made the right decision by putting the girl in the cell with her mother, but, according to The Free Thought Project, the little girl’s parents claim that she is now afraid of the police.
Bass has since pleaded not guilty to charges of petty theft and criminal trespassing.

  1. Of course she's afraid of the police. In this brave new world, the police do not want you to be their friend. They want you to cow and comply whenever they show.
Now, to the story: where the hell were they going to put the child? Maybe this podunk town has no resident "social worker" to take care of problems like this. Since the stay was short, it was wiser to leave the child with it's mother than to terrify it even more by dragging it away, kicking and screaming, and delivered to a stranger.

  2. Just seems like a bad judgement call. They probably just wanted to keep her with Mom but it could have been done outside of a cell. I mean really, it was only a half hour, they have seats outside a cell that Mom could have been cuffed to. Hopefully, they will change the way they handle this kind of thing in the future.

  3. I hate to disagree with the majority here, but there was nothing wrong with that decision. The three year old would be afraid of anything disrupting her life and has no concept of being deprived of freedom. She was totally safe in the holding cell and with her mom, where she belonged until her dad got her. I don't like the police for a minute, but I will not make shit up just to go along.

  7. If you choose to bring your kid along for your illegal stunts, then its on you if your kid winds up next to you in a cell. Moms lucky the kid stayed with her instead of going to a social worker and possibly into foster care. Poor freaking choice, mom! I appluade the cops for letting the kid stay w mom until dad came.
